Integration Versus Interfacing

Probably the least understood part of creating an enterprise platform is the term “integration”.

It is usually confused with the more or less “garden variety” approach, referred to as “interfacing”.  They are not the same thing.  Many software products provide interfaces to sister modules, or even to other developer’s software.

In the simplest (and most common) sense, “interfacing” usually refers to the transfer of a “charge” from one system to another, for instance, from a restaurant POS system to a hotel front desk system’s guest account.  For most competing systems, that is the start and end of “integration”.

NorthSoft has, since, 1994, provided true “integration”.  Integration means that in addition to simple (and indeed far more complex) interfacing of POS systems to “account” systems such as Front Desk, Club Management, or General Accounting, NorthSoft provides full capture of accounting information on a daily basis from ALL related points of sale to its PowerGL accounting package.

This true integration provides the end user with fast, accurate, error-proof incorporation of sales (revenues), tax (liabilities), and settlement (clearing) information into their accounting, allowing the effortless production of daily accounting financial statements.

If it isn’t integrated, it isn’t worth having.  Systems which “export” to other systems are NOT integrated.  Exporting from one application and Importing into another is time consuming, and prone to operator error.  NorthSoft certainly provides data export and import as well, but we do not consider that to be “integration”, because it isn’t.
